Guiding Light – Double Meaning This Week

without comments

Guiding Light the soap opera ends tomorrow.  It will go off here at 3:00 P.M.  When they announced it back in May I thought it would be so odd that grandma could claim to have heard/seen almost every episode of that show.  That was not to happen though.  Tuesday my guiding light passed away.  Tomorrow as Guiding Light starts it’s final airing we will be laying her to rest.  My guiding light for the last 29 years and 342 days will be in her final resting place as the show says it’s last good byes.

It’s odd, this week I have watched each episode online.  None of the other soaps that she watched just Guiding Light.  I really think that it was her favorite and it has been a comfort this week.  For their final episodes they are bringing back people from the past.  With each face that pops up a memory pops in my head.  Usually it’s the same scene.  Grandma in her chair with a book in hand and some smart remark about the character.  ”Oh Philip how stupid can you be.”  ”Alan can be such an ass.”  The one that won’t be returning is Ross.  Ross’ yearly holiday speeches were always a bright spot for us.  Preparations for family dinners started after Ross finished his speech.

I don’t want the show to end but more now than when it was first announced.  In a way I thought grandma would live on in the memories that came with watching Guiding Light.  But tomorrow they both end.  The Guiding Light that came on at 2 every afternoon that I watched with my guiding light whenever I was home will not be on anymore and my guiding light won’t be here to watch it with me.
